A lot of times, when I get emails, they’re addressed to “Miss SciFi and Scary” or “Dear SciFi and Scary”. I’ll be honest, this made me laugh a bit, but then I realized that I might not be cluing my readers in enough to who I am. So I decided to tidy up this about page a bit for your edification!
Who Runs Sci-Fi and Scary?
SciFi and Scary is run by Lilyn G., a female with a serious love of horror and “hard” science fiction. I also have an almost obscene love for bad puns. Since the beginning of the year, including about 30 short stories, I have read 120 books according to my Goodreads Challenge for 2016. Pagewise, that comes out to 24, 174 pages as of 11:39 p.m. on 4/8/2106.
So, you could say: I Read. A Lot.
I also have a full-time job, and a kid with an incurable, eventually terminal illness. On top of that, I have severe PTSD, and insomnia.
Now, you’ll often see me use “we”. That’s because while this site is primarily run by just one person, I do have a helper.

“Miss L” the Mini-Reviewer
Miss L is (as of March 2016) now 7 years old. She reads at a fourth-grade level. She has her own occasional reviews on Kids’ Corner Saturdays. She is frequently peering over my shoulder, giving her input, asking me what I’m reading, etc. I treat her like a little adult, and the payoff is having a young child with some surprising insights and a serious book fetish as a result. So, it’s surprisingly natural to me to use “we” instead of “I” most of the time.
I am committed to giving the readers bluntly honest reviews of Science Fiction, Horror, and Thriller reads. Occasionally, books from other genres are picked up and reviewed, but only those that either fall under fantasy, or have enough sci-fi, horror, or thriller elements in them to qualify for listing will be reviewed.
Every Saturday is Kids’ Corner day, where attention is given solely to kids books and other issues pertaining to kids literacy.
Sundays are the only days in which you will not see book reviews posted on this site. Sundays are for laughs and general silliness.
If you tweet, you can [twitter-follow screen_name=’scifiandscary’]. While I do NOT take book review requests via Twitter, feel free to hit me up to chat about books or movies!
I do Instagram too, though I’m decidedly more relaxed on there, and you’re apt to see pictures of Miss L, my cats, brussel sprouts, etc. Still interested?
Also, you can find me on Facebook. I share Fort Bookworm with Allie from Allie’s Opinions .

Because, I too, have a first grader. Have you seen “The Book With No Pictures”? I read it to the class and they LOVED it. It’s a must read around here. Thank you for stopping by my blog so I could discover yours!
I’ve heard about it, but it had slipped my mind. Thanks for reminding me about it! I’ll see if the local library carries it =)
Psst I nominated ya for the Creative Bloggers Award over here!
Cool! Thank you =)
Well you do seem Creative 😛
I try to be. 🙂 I’ll work up a nominations thingie on it later. Right now I’m working on a “This Week in Books” and…Geesh, I read a lot. haha.
I read a single book at a time myself but apparently now I read a lot. If my posts are to be believed. *nodnod*
I have a (audio) book for the car, a book for downtime at work, and generally 2 books for reading before bed in case one of them is boring me. Somewhere along the line I lost the ability to read one book at a time. My brain is too scattered. -.-
I have my Ebooks for work. And at home. I have to focus one at at time and devour the book. I kinda wish I could do more then one at a time though.
Its only good as long as you’re reading distinctly different books. I try to carefully avoiding reading two books at the same time who have characters with names that are even faintly similar.
*nodnod* Makes sense!
I just followed you on twitter and instagram and added you on goodreads. Hope this is okay! 🙂
Perfectly fine 🙂 I wouldn’t have the information available if it wasn’t okay!
Hi there! Thanks for commenting on my blog today—it brought me to your neat blog! 🙂 I don’t read as many sci-fi or thriller books as I would like, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing what books you recommend and review.

Hello! Just noticed that you have followed my journalism blog (thank you!) where I post my work, and I was wondering if you’d be more interested in following my book blog, since you have one yourself? I had a bit of a mix up with which blog my comments would send people to, as I’d prefer them to go to my book blog, but hopefully that’s sorted now. To find it, either click my name or this link:

And if not, then that’s fine, and thank you for following my other blog!
Your posts look great, and I am looking forward to reading more! 🙂

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve just set up a site sort of like NetGalley
where you can review free books online. It’s here to help self-published authors
get a little more attention than they’re getting, but I hope it’ll do nice things for you too. Let’s see:
– you can post your website in your profile so you can get some backlink love from Google
– I’ll help tweet your reviews
– you can make some coffee money by adding your Amazon Associates ID to the book reviews and get commissions
on any purchases made through your reviews
– …and it’s a new place to make a name for youself. Plus, I can imagine there’s a slight prestige in reviewing obscure books.
Good reviewers will be loved on this site and if you’re into being loved, come check it out. If there are other benefits, things you,
as a book blogger, are looking for, please let me know and I’ll see if I can build it into the site.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this. The site is http://www.paperbackreviewer.com and you can sign up with your Twitter or FB account.
Hope to see you on the site!
Best regards,
John Khoury
