Trigger Warnings: I wish this list would stop growing, sometimes.

Welcome to my Pet Project

Since losing my daughter a couple years ago, I have lost the ability to casually watch some things. I wish there was a way to know ahead of time if a movie or tv show episode had anything potentially ‘triggering’ for me, specifically in regards to child death.

Some people are lucky enough that they can go through horrible things and not be overly disturbed by a related item in a movie. I’m not one of them, and I know I’m not alone. So, I started a list. As I come across them, I’ll add to this list. I try to update it every other Thursday.

As it is my personal project, this list will primarily mention triggers of child death. However, if you wish to contribute with something else that triggered you, feel free to let me know in the comments below.

Thanks.

(Of necessity, I will be ‘spoiling’ parts of these movies. I will keep it as vague as possible, but there can be no helping it. If your urge to avoid a spoiler is higher than your curiosity about the trigger warning, stop reading now.

SpoilerWarning

Freshly Added Movies/TV Episodes are in RED and will be at the beginning of each section. BOOKS will be at the end of appropriate sections, listed in PURPLE.

Listed by category in the following order: Action, Horror, Mystery/Thriller, Scifi, Drama/Misc, Fantasy

ACTION

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) Flatline scene w/ sound.
There’s a scene where one of the characters dies in the hospital, and the flatline of his heartbeat is shown and the audio blared. Holy crap. Having taken my daughter off life support, I simply can’t take that sound. It sends me into immediate flashbacks.

Poseidon (2006)- Drowning Scene
Toward the end of the movie, one of the men has a violent (jerking, gasping) drowning scene.

San Andreas (2015) – Drowning Scene – x2 (First is basically just referred to, second is center-stage)
There’s a scene about 1/4th of the way through the movie where it is obvious that one of the main character’s children drowned, and he tried to save her, but couldn’t. A flash of her on the raft, a flash of her in the water. That’s it.

However, towards the very end of the movie, the hero’s other daughter visibly drowns (jerking motions, going still) and he removes her from the water and has to do CPR for a while to get her back.

Mad Max, Fury Road (2015): Stillborn / Baby Death

My understanding is this happens about halfway through the movie, but I haven’t seen it myself. My partner reported it to me.

RAMBO (2008) – Multiple child deaths – Shooting, Stabbing, etc. & Rape, implied.

Its a Rambo movie, so you know there’s going to be lots of violence and death. Apparently a few scenes in here are really disturbing, though, with kids getting executed at close range and such.

HORROR

Martyrs (2008) – Suicide | Domestic Violence

A young girl is hit several times across the face. They do a closeup of a woman slitting her wrists with a large knife.

Z-Nation (2014)(TV show, 1st Episode)- Zombie Baby

Pet Semetary  (1989)- Child death | Hit by a semi
There’s a scene fairly early on in the movie where a little boy runs out in the road and gets struck by a car. The child’s body is not shown, but its very clear what happens.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) – Not a trigger, per say, in that something happens in it that might have happened to you but… Maternal Death | Zombie Baby.

Scene happens near the end. Mother is tied down, turns, is put down after discovery. Then wrapped small bundle is unwrapped, very obviously dead/zombified baby.

The Happening (2008): Child Death / Shooting

About 3/4ths of the way through, a child is killed via shooting.

Antichrist (2009)Child Death / Falling

A baby falls to its death – in slow motion.

The Gallows (2015)Hanging x 4

A few far off shots, but a few up close shots of dead bodies hanging. One scene of actual hanging taking place.

Mist (2007) – Child Death / Shooting

End of movie. Kids are shot in the head because the parental figure doesn’t want them to suffer a horrible death.

MYSTERY/THRILLER

The Sixth Sense (1999) – Child Death x2 Gunshot | Poisoning

Now, obviously, since I’m sure basically everyone has seen this movie at some point, you know there’s lots of dead people in. So I’m just going to point out the two child trigger ones.

Near the last 1/4th of the film, a dead child references “knowing where his dad’s gun is” and when he turns, you see the back of his head is blown off. You see a child being poisoned to death near the very end of the film.

SCIFI

Sense 8 (2015) (TV Show,1st episode) – Suicide / Gunshot to the Head

Happens pretty early on. Character is finding the other characters who are special, and after its done, she commits suicide.

The Butterfly Effect (2004) -In Utero Death due to Asphyxiation

At the end of the movie, you are watching an ultrasound and you see the baby deliberately wrap the cord around its neck and strangle itself so that it will not be born alive.

FANTASY

Bridge to Terabithia (2007) AND BOOK (1977) – Child Death / Drowning(?)

I know there is a child death in this movie, when a character tries to cross a creek on a rope swing, and the swing breaks. I’m not sure if its the fall or drowning that kills the child, though. I assume it happens after the first half of the movie. (I’ve seen it, but I can’t remember.)

Pans Labyrinth(2006) – Child Death / Shooting

A child is shot, and then the camera focuses on the face as the child smiles and then dies.

Mercy’s Gift  (2015) – BOOK by Katy Huth Jones– Infant Death

At the very end of the book, an infant dies.

DRAMA/MISC

True Blood (2008) – (TV Show) Season 7,  Eps 8-9 -Infant Death

I was informed to mention specifically “Giving birth to death” So I’m assuming this means stillborn.

Man Bites Dog (1992) – Rape | Child Death (murder)

Apparently this movie is full of graphic violence, but the two big ones to look out for are a graphic rape scene where the victim is later disembowled, and a young boy gets murdered.

Hard Candy (2005) – Pedophilia | Inappropriate child pictures | Implied suicide

Apparently none of this is actually shown, but its talked about enough that it can be very upsetting to those who have been abused as a child.

North Country (2005)Rape (Teacher/Student)

Not sure when it happens, so just a headsup.

My Girl (1991) – Child Death | Anaphylactic Shock
There’s a scene later on in the movie where a child character ends up getting stung by bees and dies from it.

What to Expect (2012)Miscarriage

Blood shown, but nothing more graphic, I believe it’s about halfway through the movie.

The Other Woman (2009)Infant Death / SIDS

Scenes peppered throughout movie. Pregnancy. Baby alive and after discovered dead. Triggering phrases said to mother. (For what its worth, the friend who clued me in to the triggers on this one said its a fantastic movie. Just be prepared.)

Rabbit Hole (2010)Child death /Accidental

This is a movie about a couple losing their 4 year old child due to an accident, so needless to say, Triggers are everywhere. Proceed with caution, kleenex, and chocolate if you choose to watch it.

UP (2009)Miscarriage and/or infertility

It isn’t exactly clear, but in the scenes in the beginning, the two characters younger selves have lost a baby, or are finding out they can never have kids.

Big Hero 6 (2014)Assumed death / disappearance

Loss of adult daughter while parent watches.

Pay It Forward (2000) – Child Death / Stabbing

Near end of movie, child is stabbed in stomach during fight. Dies from it.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008) AND BOOK (2006)- 2 Child Deaths / Holocaust Gas Chamber

Happens near end of film.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss. I made the call to turn off my dad’s life support a year ago. Different for me as I know, in my heart, that I was following his wishes. I cannot imagine, nor do I want to, what you have gone and continue to go through. My heart breaks for you. Wishing you much love, my friend. xo

    1. Thank you and I’m sorry that you have had to do this to someone you love, too. I don’t regret my decision because I’m absolutely sure I made the right choice for her, but dealing with the aftermath just freaking sucks 🙁
