This is one of my pet peeves. Its better, I think, to use too many commas than not enough. The examples this blogger cite showcase this perfectly.
Its just good grammar.

Oh my god, yes! I have to edit and proofread people’s writing at work, and my dedication to insisting that they use the oxford comma got me a cool mug for my birthday. It says, “You can take my Oxford Comma from my dead, cold, and lifeless hands.” I decided it wasn’t the right time to criticizE the gift for the tautology of “dead” and “lifeless”.
I want a mug like that! haha! My mug says “Let me drop EVERYTHING and work on YOUR problem.”
