Our Favorite Couples in Sci-Fi & Horror

A banner with the words The Top Ten Tuesday List on it.It’s inevitable with Valentine’s Day being on Wednesday that this Top Ten Tuesday would be focused on the mushier side of things. Whilst we originally wrinkled our noses a bit, we decided to bravely play along to foster the illusion that we can still have the feels. So, welcome to our favorite couples in Sci-Fi & Horror. Some you’ll have heard of, some you probably won’t, and some might even disgust you, but we don’t judge!

Our Favorite Couples in Sci-Fi & Horror

Sci-FiLilyn

Brad & Annie from The Happy Chip (book)- While this wasn’t a particularly sweet or funny relationship, I liked how they operated as true partners. They never made decisions when possible without consulting the other half of the team. They appreciated their partner’s strength and weaknesses. They were one of the most believable couples I’ve ever come across.

Peabody and McNab from the In Death series (book) – This just fills the gooshy mushy happy side of me. I mean, you might have expected me to put Roarke and Dallas on here, but while they’re fun for make-believe, Peabody and McNab feels like it could actually happen. You know? They work so well together. He’s so strange and she’s so free-spirited. You see them together for years and years.

Wall-E and Eve from Wall-E (movie) – Yes, a kid’s cartoon is getting referenced here, but can you blame me? It’s so sweet and innocent, and even if their little robot babies would look like deformed trash compactors, I’m still rooting for them to have little robot babies!!

Small Sci-Fi and Scary Divider

Wash & Zoe from Firefly (TV show)- Who better to kick things off than the eccentric Wash and his stoic beauty Zoe? Firefly might have only lasted for one season and a movie, but it made a permanent impression on a lot of people with its characters. I was one of them. In my opinion, the love between the two of these is probably one of the best you’ll find across the genre.

Small Sci-Fi and Scary Divider

Ten and Rose from Doctor Who (TV show)- Yes, yes, not technically a couple. Whatever. I stopped watching Doctor Who pretty soon after Ten and Rose got split up. I adored Nine and Rose, but Ten and Rose made me go all a’puddle inside. The feeeeeeeeels, godblessit. The feels! Dr Who Gif

Horror was a little more…difficult to find couples that survive the story. Below is my list of couples who’s stories may not always end well but they were romantic while they lasted.

Kirito and Asuna from Sword Art Online anime – Ok, ok. Technically this is fantasy/sci-fi/action but I really, really wanted to mention them because A: Kirito and Asuna are freaking adorable together and B: They are literally one of the best anime couples that I have ever seen. Heck, they have a more adult relationship than most actual people I know. So, I’m sorry to sneak in a sci-fi on you but I had to mention them.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie – Lover’s Vow segment – Preston & Carola – Why couldn’t you have just kept your mouth shut, Preston? Yes, honesty in a relationship is important but telling your beloved that a gargoyle spared your life the night you met probably isn’t that high on the relationship-breaking secrets list. This story may or may not bring a slight tear to my eye – The Gargoyle looks so sad when she has to kill her beloved and the gargoyle babies are adorable!

Small Sci-Fi and Scary Divider

Odd Thomas and Stormy Llewellyn from the Odd Thomas series. I very rarely like ‘cute’ couples but Odd and Stormy felt like a very real couple and (as far as I’ve read, anyways) Odd has remained faithful to his Stormy.

Small Sci-Fi and Scary Divider

James and Mary from Silent Hill 2 (video game) – This might seem like a bad choice on the surface but really, until Mary’s illness (and beyond) James did love her. So much that he created a whole world designed to punish himself for his actions. They may not be “the best” couple but their feelings are very real. no matter what people might think. They were certainly the first video game couple that were memorable for me.

Small Sci-Fi and Scary Divider

Arnie Cunningham and Christine – What can I say? Christine may be a bit on the jealous side but she really, really loves Arnie. Forever.

  1. I was truly caught by surprise in Odd Thomas. I cried! What a great idea for a post. And you made me laugh when you mentioned how hard it was to find a couple that survived in horror:) Funny that I can think of some great couples in books but drawing a blank with movies now.

  2. Funny how few couples stand out. Both examples that came to mind were from the horror field, and both from Fritz Leiber.
Conjure Wife (1953) features Norman and Tansy Saylor, a nice young college professor and his wife. Except that she practices magic. She trusts him enough to stop. And then she trusts enough to fight hard against the doom overtaking her. Meanwhile, he’s not so proud that he can’t admit a mistake, however incredible, and knows his wife well enough to . . . well, that would give away the ending.
Our Lady of Darkness (1977). No question the plot centers on Franz Westen, hack writer and unfocused human being. But its his more-or-less girlfriend, concert pianist Calpurnia who has to do the heavy lifting when magical forces of order and chaos collide.
