Jurassic World Review
Jurassic World takes waaaayyy too long to get going. It feels like at least the beginning 60 percent of the movie is pure set-up, and given that the series has been established and is/was still well-loved (Well, the first one, at least), I think they didn’t need to do nearly as much as they did. I was squirming in my seat the first time I watched it, torn between anticipation and boredom. It was worse for the second viewing.
However, once it does finally get going: Its pure awesomeness! The second time around, I still flinched, still clenched my hands together, couldn’t help but be on the edge of my seat and sucking in breaths at the appropriate places. Nor could I stop a small, sibilant “Yesssssssssss!” at the climax.
Now, smaller picks.
I didn’t like the subtle reinforcement of homophobia. The character offered up as the villain for us to hate shows some obvious attraction via skeezy touchy-feely with another character of the same sex. (The moves are just skeezy. I’d call them that if it was M/F, F/F, or M/M.) Naturally, this character is the only one that shows signs of homosexual attraction. This is a bit irritating. I honestly believe, until homosexuality is as accepted as heterosexuality, that we need to make an honest effort to avoid portraying it in a negative light.
But, I loved the fact that they show that Claire isn’t a woman that just falls apart when things get stressful. She doesn’t depend on Owen to rescue her, and even though she’s nominally ‘in charge’, she doesn’t hesitate to step in and do whatever needs to be done to protect herself or the kids once its obvious that things are very much of the not-good variety.
The raptors were fantastic. The dramatic music at -omitted as to not spoil- as one of them charges in? You can’t help but cackle and cheer for them.
I loved the homages to the first movie. They were done exactly right. Present, but respectful. Not crammed in where they didn’t fit well. Overall, yes, I adored this movie and I am buying it as soon as payday finally gets here! Click here to rent or buy Jurassic World now on Amazon.com
