DK findout! Animals Review
DK findout! Animals is a short, picture-laden introduction to animals. The author (Andrea Mills) breaks things down in simple and easy to understand terms. She starts with what is an animal and goes from there. It seems to be aimed at the 6-10 year old range. Littler kids may enjoy looking through it at all the animals, but it probably won’t hold their attention for long.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t a huge fan of DK findout! Animals. Maybe it’s because I’ve been spoiled by the Animal Bites series by Animal Planet. Regardless, I didn’t feel that this book was well-organized. It seemed to jump around several times instead of guiding the reader through in a logical progression. The page layouts were simple, but combined with the picture quality (at least on the file I viewed) came across as lackluster. At no point did I see an animal or read a fact and think “Wow, that’s cool! I want to know more!” as I have with other animal information books I’ve reviewed.
The facts listed were interesting, and I did like the fact that this was a beginner’s broad overview of animals as a whole. I just don’t feel like it stands out in any way. There are other items on the market that, whilst they might be a bit more narrow in scope, are more visually attractive, informative, and attention grabbing. The last bit of the book was probably the best part. The Animal Facts and Figures was a collection of facts that young readers would probably think were very cool.
Overall, I just can’t recommend DK findout! Animals. There are other options available that far outshine it.
