What’s it about?
Ellie and Pudgy are back! This time, they’re telling us all about their adventures on their very first vacation to the beach. This book aims to introduce young children to the concept of vacation, and what might happen on one so that any fears about the new experience might be soothed.
My Review of Ellie’s Best Beach Vacation Ever
Just like with Ellie Goes Back to School, Ellie’s Best Beach Vacation Ever has specific goals, and it does a good job in accomplishing those goals. The stuffed animal characters are a fun twist away from traditional photos/illustrations (though it may take you a while to warm up to them). It enables kids to project their feelings into the stuffed animals and can make voicing concerns a bit easier.
This book covers a typical ‘beach vacation’ and the various sights and activities children may experience while on one. It is a bit longer than the previous book, and takes Ellie and Pudgy from getting ready to go through to the very last day of vacation.
Neither the six year old or myself were as fond of Ellie’s Best Beach Vacation Ever as we were of Ellie Goes Back to School. I think, in part, it was because of the length. It just seemed a little bit too long for the simple subject it set out to cover, and the text just wasn’t quite interesting enough to keep our attention. There was a bit of repetitiveness with the biking section that could have been condensed, in particular. I can admire what it sets out to do, but we both agreed that it just wasn’t quite as good.
Overall, though, this is a cute, fun series and the books are definitely worth checking out for young children.
